Program of Work
In your two years in the Careers with Children program, your skills will continue to improve. We believe in giving back to our community, and to keep bettering ourselves with life skills such as, independence, responsibility, public speaking and communication skills. Here is a list of some events (details below); Back-Pack, Sunshine Run, Parents Night Out, Safety Awareness Days, FCCLA, Job Shadowing.
How We Get Involved
"Back-Pack"- This event is ran once a month amongst schools in the Greenville City School District. It consists of ordering food such as canned goods, and boxed items, then packing said food into plastic baggies. The purpose of this program is to send food home on Fridays, for children who don't have enough food in their home to last the weekend.
"Sunshine Run"- Every year there is a 5K race, called the Sunshine Run that raises money for a new cause every year. Careers with Children students role in this, is to sit with, and accompany the children of those who decided to participate in the race.
"Parents Night Out"- Greenville Learning Center hosts several of these events every school year. The parents pay, ($10 per child) to leave their children with Careers with Children students, and staff, so they can enjoy a quiet evening alone together. During this time, students and their siblings enjoy hours of play, movies, and snacks. The proceeds from this night go towards paying for FCCLA trips, and career placement opportunities for our high-school students.
"Safety Awareness Days"- Greenville Sr. High School holds an annual event called "Safety Awareness Days" at the Darke County Fairgrounds, nearly a dozen first grade classrooms show up to this event. Different organizations such as Future Farmers (FFA) of America, and Careers with Children (CWC) set up booths around the site, teaching different safety skills. Every year CWC teaches Knife Safety, how to properly hold a knife, why you should always have a parent help you, etc. The group uses pumpkins at this booth, and offers alternative decorating solutions other than carving. (Painting, stickers, markers, gluing, feathers).
"FCCLA"- Our students are involved in regional, state, and national FCCLA competitions. Our members return annually with awards from all three tiers of competitive events. Students create activities for our preschoolers, and use these results in their FCCLA projects. When choosing more difficult projects, members have the opportunity to incorporate the schools of our district, and the surrounding community.
"Operation Gratitude"- This year, FCCLA joined with a program called "Operation Gratitude", this project consisted of collecting donation items to put together care packages for active duty troops and first responders. Greenville High School held a movie night on Friday April 7th, 2017. Students sold admission tickets as well as snacks to faculty and peers who came. Through the week of the 2nd-7th announcements were made to the school that FCCLA members would be coming around to first period classrooms and collecting donation items for troops. Greenville FCCLA also contacted our local Walmart facility, store #2035, and received a series of donations from them as well. Through the collection of proceeds, and events held in the community Greenville FCCLA brought over 500 donation items to the state FCCLA conference in April. At the conference FCCLA members across Ohio put together over 200 care packages to be sent to active duty troops and first responders.
Job Shadow Placements
Careers with Children seniors have the opportunity to job shadow in different educational settings. All are placed in infant-toddler rooms as part of the course, but students have the opportunity to choose where they'd like to sit in at. From special education rooms, a first grade classroom, or even a high-school science room. Our students are given the chance to grow, and develop their own interests as young adults. Being placed in these different settings allows them to see hands on what it'd be like to work there, and this can help our students decide which career path they'd like to take, education or elsewhere.
